Step-by-Step Instructions
- In a small bowl, combine 1 packet of active dry yeast with 1 cup of warm milk and a pinch of sugar. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes foamy.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together 3 cups of all-purpose flour, 1/4 cup of granulated sugar, and 1 teaspoon of salt. Gradually add in the yeast mixture, along with 1/4 cup of melted butter, 1 beaten egg, and the zest and juice of 1 orange, stirring to form a soft dough.
- Transfer the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead it for 8-10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
- Shape the kneaded dough into a ball and place it in a greased bowl, turning it to coat. Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel and let the dough rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until it has doubled in size.
- Once the dough has risen, punch it down gently to release the air. Divide it into 12 equal pieces and roll each piece into a rope about 10-12 inches long. Twist the ropes into knots and place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Brush the tops of the knots with melted butter or an egg wash to give them a golden color. Bake the Sweet Orange Knots in the preheated oven for 15-18 minutes or until they are golden brown.
- While the knots are still warm from the oven, prepare the glaze by mixing 1 cup of powdered sugar with enough orange juice to achieve a drizzle consistency. Drizzle the glaze over the Sweet Orange Knots.
