For the Casserole
  • 6 pieces Large Croissants can substitute with brioche or challah
  • 2 cups Half and Half or Whole Milk coconut or almond milk makes for a great non-dairy swap
  • 1 teaspoon Pure Vanilla Extract omit only if absolutely necessary
  • 6 pieces Large Eggs
  • 1/2 cup Light Brown Sugar white sugar can also work in a pinch
  • 1 teaspoon Ground Cinnamon nutmeg can be used for an alternative flavor
  • 1/4 teaspoon Ground Nutmeg optional but often recommended for deeper flavor
  • 1 teaspoon Kosher Salt
For the Fruit
  • 1 cup Strawberries, cut into chunks swap for raspberries or blackberries if desired
  • 1 cup Blueberries feel free to use a mix of berries for added variety
For Serving
  • 1 cup Pure Maple Syrup a must-have drizzle for serving
  • 2 tablespoons Dark Rum can substitute with bourbon or brandy
  • Powdered Sugar (for dusting) adds a sweet finishing touch
  • Lightly Sweetened Whipped Cream (optional) a creamy complement to the casserole's richness

Method
 

Preparing the Casserole
  1. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the half and half, eggs, vanilla extract, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and kosher salt until smooth.
  2. Cut the croissants in half lengthwise and layer them in a greased baking dish. Sprinkle the strawberries and blueberries over the croissants.
  3. Pour the custard mixture over the croissants and berries, ensuring everything is soaked. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight.
  4. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake for 45 to 50 minutes until golden brown and set.
  5. Warm the maple syrup and add the dark rum in a saucepan over low heat.
  6. Serve warm after dusting with powdered sugar and drizzling with the syrup.
